Terminology |
The
medical terminology course is a
comprehensive study of medical
terminology, the body systems and their
functions. Students will learn a
language that enables them to interact
more effectively in the medical
workplace and as a health
professional.

Basic
Medical Coding |
The
medical coding course teaches students
to utilize descriptive terms and how to
identify codes for reporting medical
services and procedures performed by
physicians. This course provides the
knowledge of a uniform language that
accurately describes medical, surgical,
and diagnostic services to effectively
communicate among physicians, patients,
and third parties. Satisfactory
completion of medical terminology
is a prerequisite to this course.

| Medical
Transcription |
The
medical transcription course introduces
students to eight basic medical reports,
related medical terminology and the
appropriate formats for transcribing
these reports. Students also learn the
specialized rules of grammar and
punctuation utilized in the medical
field. Satisfactory completion of
medical terminology is a prerequisite to
this course. Students should have
a working knowledge of basic
computer applications and be proficient
(40 WPM) in keyboarding.

Level II
Hospital Coding
|
The Level II Hospital Coding course
will focus on inpatient hospital coding and reimbursement issues. There will be greater focus on how to choose the principal diagnosis and how that diagnosis affects the reimbursement. There will be intense case studies for both medicine and surgery to better equip the inpatient coder with the knowledge needed to obtain the highest level of reimbursement for the hospital. |

Level II Outpatient
Coding
|
The
Level II Outpatient Coding
course give students a
better understanding of
service codes that are used
in the outpatient setting of
the clinic and outpatient
departments of the hospital
or both physician and
facility services. Special
guidelines involved in
Medicare reimbursement will
be discussed in more detail
than that covered in the
basic coding class. |

Coding
Certification Preparation |
This
course focuses on preparing students to pass the
CCA, CCS and CPC coding certification exam. It covers
reimbursement issues and provides an overview of
CPT, ICD-9CM, and HCPCS Coding, Ambulatory
Payment Classifications and Diagnostic Related
Groups, facility claim forms, hospital
reimbursement system and coding for inpatients.
There will be extensive use of coding exercises
that are hands-on to teach the proper use of
coding manuals. There will be practice exams
designed to model the actual certification exam.

Medical Office Administrative
Assistant |
This
course will provide students with an
understanding of general office policies and
typical job duties such as appropriate verbal
communications, scheduling and managing
appointments and collection procedures.
The student will be able to identify and
demonstrate professional skills needed for the
scope of practice. This study will explain
legal and ethical responsibilities and develop
the ability to perform within these boundaries.
The issues of confidentiality and the importance
of HIPPA regulations will be explained.
This study will explain the concepts of computer
effectiveness in the medical office and the
student will work with medical software
.
